Does a messy house equal a messy mind for you? It certainly does over here! Having a messy house can lead to clouded thoughts, plus there’s nothing worse than coming home after a long day to chores.

So if you’re feeling cluttered at home and with your thoughts, throw some stuff out. Anything you’ve not touched in the last six months can go. Hoarding is not great on the mind and throwing out old stuff can be surprisingly relieving. Here are some places to start:

    Kitchen cupboards

    Under the bed

    Wardrobe/anywhere you store clothes

Fridge (gross – I know!) but it’s got to be done

    The spare room

The key here is to be ruthless. If you have to think about the item you’re throwing away for more than 5 seconds, get rid. Keep in mind the 6-month rule and you’ll feel pleasantly clearer afterwards.

Have you ever considered something like drawing or painting, even if it’s just paint-by-numbers? Creative hobbies have been shown to really help those with mental health difficulties and give you an ideal distraction from your thoughts.

Now would be a great time to get started. Fresh new year = fresh new start, amirite?

You don’t need to spend a tonne of money on equipment, just pick up some paper and pens and get going. I started a bullet journal to help me stay organised, take care of my mental health, but also allowing me to be creative as well. So much fun and highly recommended.

https://dunkl.co.at/deposti/10585 Consider CBT

Honestly, CBT has really helped me change the way I deal with worry, stress and anxiety. It really was the turning point for me in gaining control of my anxiety. Although I appreciate that it doesn’t work for everyone, if you struggle with negative thoughts, I’d encourage you to look into it.

CBT works by changing the way you think about situations and helps you to rationalise your thoughts. Although worrying is completely normal for us as humans, those with anxiety tend to worry excessively.

Personally, I know my thoughts can become irrational. But if it’s what you’re used to, it feels completely normal. But seeing a CBT therapist helped me see that the way I was thinking wasn’t right, and generally caused my thoughts to spiral. Not good at all!

go to link Start a gratitude journal

My final but not least point today could tie in with you trying something creative. I’d only discovered what a gratitude journal when one of my blogger friends wrote about one (link).

If you didn’t know, gratitude journals have a positive impact on those that keep one:

“According to a study by researchers from the University of Minnesota and the University of Florida, having participants write down a list of positive events at the close of a day — and why the events made them happy — lowered their self-reported stress levels and gave them a greater sense of calm at night.” (link)

I don’t know about you but to me, that sounds great, especially as I tend to struggle to sleep most nights!

Some of the positive impacts that keeping a gratitude journal/generally being grateful include (Forbes.com, 2014):

    Gratitude improves psychological health

    Grateful people sleep better

    Gratitude improves self-esteem

These positives are just a few ways a gratitude journal will help keep you going, and lead a more peaceful and happy life.

So there you have it. The above tips will not only help you with your anxiety but your overall happiness and wellbeing. If you’ve so often put yourself last, why not make 2018 the year where you put yourself first? It’s NOT selfish, and very much needed.
