Plantronics has just recently released their new CS500 Wireless Headset Range, with the CS510 and CS520 set to replace the CS351 and CS361 respectively and the CS540 to take over from the hugely successful CS60 wireless headset. Therefore, I thought I would go through the changes between the old and the new headsets to outline the differences and see if they are worthwhile.

Due to its sheer dominance in the wireless headset market I am mainly going to focus on the CS60 and its successor; the CS540, although a lot of the updates have been similarly implemented in all of the new series.

First of all, you have to ask; “Why now?” because the old adage of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ comes to mind when you think of the CS60, with a lot of people in the industry assuming that it would have a much longer shelf life as people are still buying them (even now, 2 weeks from retirement) and I think the answer is a simple one; technology has drastically altered and improved over the last decade and Plantronics are savvy enough to know that even the best companies in the world can’t rest on their laurels.

So after several years of beating the competition, the CS60s younger, sleeker and more stylish brother the CS540 is taking over and that really is the first thing that you notice because the CS60 was launched way back in 2003 before iPods, iPads and iPhones had completely taken over the world and transformed the way technology is designed and viewed.

This means that the difference in the styles of the times is reflected in the two headsets, the CS60 being more reminiscent of pre-flat screen computer monitors with its bland palette and matte finish and, in stark contrast, the CS540 is more in line with recent technology, mimicking that glossy black glass style finish that a lot of 3D televisions have nowadays.

Besides the cosmetic update, a lot of the changes are more like small tweaks but combined they add up to make a rather attractive package. The first of these features is a bit of a double edged sword because the battery life has actually decreased from eight hours (a standard working day) to only six hours, which most people will see as a bad thing at first but the reason it’s not is because instead they have also cut the charge time in half to thirty minutes, meaning you can pop it on charge whilst you have your lunch and it will last the rest of the day, even if you choose to do that overtime.

Other improvements include; the build quality has been vastly improved, it’s lighter and it’s also much more user friendly having ditched the two wires in favour of one with a splitter to alleviate some of the confusion and allow the end user to set up the headset themselves without the aid of an engineer.

Overall then, the new features plus the style update, along with the price of the new model being pretty much on par with the CS60 anyway, mean that the CS540 looks set to become a welcome new addition to the Plantronics family and if you were considering a wireless solution for your company then there has never been a better time to invest.
